The official opening and handover of Mbuya Esther Memorial Clinic in Mutakura Village, Ward 17, Chimanimani District, on 10 October 2026, marks a significant milestone in improving access to primary healthcare for local communities.
The clinic is a remarkable testament to the power of community-driven development, generosity, and the enduring love of family. The project was inspired by Joyce Kumbirai (née Nyamutsika), a daughter of Mutakura Village, who sought to honour the memory of her late mother, Esther Mushanguri, by giving back to the community she once called home. The initiative was formally introduced in October 2024 when the Mutakura Village Development Committee, led by Chairperson Caleb Mutakura, approached Ward 17 Councillor Livermore Utseya to seek permission to construct a clinic. The project was driven by the need to address the long distances residents had to travel to access healthcare at Biriri Rural Hospital, particularly following the expansion of Ward 17.
Through the financial support of Joyce Kumbirai and her husband, coupled with the invaluable contribution of the community, the vision has become a reality. All 14 villages contributed bricks and labour, demonstrating the spirit of unity and collective responsibility that made this achievement possible.
A PROJECT BUILT ON GENEROSITY AND PARTNERSHIP
The clinic represents a private capital investment of approximately US$181,800, contributed by the funder and the community. Chimanimani Rural District Council and the Department of Public Works also played important roles in inspecting the construction works to ensure compliance with public health standards and healthcare facility requirements.
The facility is approximately 92% complete, with most structural, finishing, and essential service works completed. Some outstanding works include flooring in the youth hall and front entrance, remaining plumbing connections, electrical fittings, waste-management infrastructure, and other finishing works. Following the handover, Chimanimani Rural District Council will take responsibility for the facility’s integration into the public healthcare system and will include the outstanding works in its 2027 budget while continuing to mobilise additional resources.
A MODERN FACILITY DESIGNED TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY
Mbuya Esther Memorial Clinic comprises three major sections designed to meet a range of community needs:
Clinical and Administrative Wing:
- Featuring reception and waiting areas, consultation and treatment rooms, a dispensary, counselling room, administrative offices, and other essential facilities.
- Inpatient and Maternity Wing: Equipped with male and female wards, a labour ward, a labour room, and a maternity waiting shelter with staff accommodation for up to three resident nurses.
- Community Youth Hall Complex: A dedicated space for health education, reproductive health awareness, life-skills development, youth programmes, and community meetings.
- The facility also incorporates water-based sanitation infrastructure and water-storage facilities to support service delivery.
TRANSFORMING HEALTHCARE ACCESS FOR SIX COMMUNITIES
Once fully operational, the clinic is expected to serve residents from Muusha, Nyamusundu, Chinyai, Tiya, Saurombe, and Biriri. Its establishment will reduce the long distances and transport costs associated with seeking medical assistance, promote timely treatment and routine healthcare, ease pressure on Biriri Rural Hospital, and strengthen the primary healthcare network in Chimanimani District. Beyond providing medical services, the youth hall will create opportunities for community engagement, health awareness, and youth development.
A LEGACY THAT WILL SERVE GENERATIONS
The handover of the clinic to Chimanimani Rural District Council is a crucial step towards ensuring its long-term sustainability. Through integration into the Council’s public health framework, the facility is positioned to receive professional staffing, maintenance, and continued institutional support. This initiative also supports Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy and the national vision of achieving an upper-middle-income economy by 2030, with equitable access to essential services and a commitment to leaving no one and no place behind. As Mbuya Esther Memorial Clinic begins this new chapter, it stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when individuals, families, communities, and local authorities work together towards a shared goal.
Congratulations to Joyce Kumbirai and her husband, the Mutakura Village Development Committee, the 14 contributing villages, Ward 17 leadership, and Chimanimani Rural District Council for this important milestone.
The legacy of Mbuya Esther Mushanguri will live on through improved healthcare access, renewed hope, and the lives that this facility will touch for generations to come.
